Employer Background

The Clinical and Theragnostic Department within the Nuclear Medicine Research Infrastructure (NuMeRI) is seeking to appoint two Nuclear Medicine Research Radiographers. NuMeRI is part of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation’s (DSTI) South African Research Infrastructure Roadmap (SARIR), established in 2015. NuMeRI aims to consolidate expertise and implement new strategic initiatives in nuclear technologies in medicine and biosciences. This initiative significantly enhances Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) capacity within the health sector in South Africa. NuMeRI supports healthcare research and development and is committed to transforming nuclear medicine field through ground-breaking research, promoting collaboration, and driving innovation to improve patient care, inform teaching and learning practices, and enhance outcomes. This research facility focuses on drug development and clinical and theragnostic research, driving new strategic initiatives that place it as global player in RDI.

NuMeRI houses major five units, namely, Pre-Clinical Imaging (PCIF), Radiopharmacy (RP), Clinical Theragnostic (C&T), Basic and Translational Research (BTR) and Medical Physics and Radiobiology (MPR). NuMeRI with its affiliated with institutions provides comprehensive theragnostic in cancer care to patients. It is the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Anchor Centre for teaching and training and offers open collaborations with national and international institutions.

About the Clinical Theragnostic Centre

The Clinical Theragnostic Department is a specialised Nuclear Medicine facility dedicated to advancing precision medicine through the integration of molecular imaging and targeted radionuclide therapy.

The Department provides patient-centred clinical services while supporting innovative clinical research, the development of novel radiopharmaceuticals and theragnostic approaches. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the Department aims to translate cutting-edge nuclear medicine research into an improved diagnostic and therapeutic options for patients.

Post Requirements

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Nuclear Medicine from an accredited institution.
• 1–5 years’ work experience.
• Active HPCSA registration as a Nuclear Medicine Radiographer.
• Added advantages would be an additional qualification or experience in Nuclear Medicine, Molecular Imaging, PET/CT, SPECT/CT or radionuclide therapy, previous experience in a clinical research and radioactive environment will.

Knowledge and Skills

• Sound knowledge of Nuclear Medicine imaging procedures, including planar imaging, SPECT/CT and PET/CT.
• Knowledge and understanding of radiopharmaceuticals, radioactive materials and radiation safety principles.
• Knowledge of ALARA principles and safe handling of radioactive patients and materials.
• Competence in patient preparation, radiopharmaceutical administration and acquisition of high-quality diagnostic images.
• Knowledge of image processing, reconstruction and quality control.
• Understanding of radionuclide therapies and theragnostic will be advantageous.
• Good documentation and data-management skills, with strong attention to detail.
• Computer literacy and the ability to learn and use specialised imaging and research systems.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary research team.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality Nuclear Medicine imaging across planar, SPECT/CT and PET/CT services.
• Perform imaging and radiopharmaceutical administration for clinical imaging and clinical trials.
• Participate in innovative molecular imaging and theragnostic research.
• Ensure compliance with radiation safety, ALARA, SOPs, GCP and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Perform image processing, reconstruction, quantitative imaging and research data collection.
• Support dosimetry and therapy-related imaging where applicable.
• Maintain accurate clinical and research documentation and ensure data integrity.
• Participate in equipment quality control and quality improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, medical physicists, radiopharmacists, radiochemists and research professionals.
• Participate in development of protocols, SOPs, audits, quality improvement initiatives, presentations and scientific activities.
• Promote a culture of patient safety, research excellence, innovation and continuous professional development.

Registration with a Professional Council

• Registration with the HPCSA will be compulsory.

Application Details

• This is a five-year, renewable contract position.
• NuMeRI will offer a total cost-to-company remuneration package, which will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
